Railroad Ties: Relay and Landscape

Omaha Track is one of the nation’s largest processors and distributors of used railroad ties, providing a reliable supply for landscaping, retaining walls, fencing, and other secondary markets. After ties are removed from the active track, they are loaded, transported, and processed at one of our many facilities across the United States.

Each tie undergoes a defined quality control process, where it is carefully sorted, graded, bundled, and banded to ensure consistency across all our locations. This process allows Omaha Track to provide customers with dependable quality and safe handling at every step.

Common Standard Railroad Tie Types

Used Railroad Tie

Used railroad ties are a durable, cost-effective option, typically measuring 8–9 feet long, weighing 150–175 lbs each, and cut from hardwoods at approximately 7” x 9”.

Switch Tie

Repurposed switch ties, sourced from railroad turnouts, range from 10–18 feet in length and are typically sold by the foot, offering flexibility for a variety of project needs. They are graded according to Omaha Track’s tie grading specifications below.

#1 Grade Ties: Straight, square, and solid with three good sides. May show minor end splits and minimal plate wear. Ideal for retaining walls and similar applications.

#2 Grade Ties: Two to three good sides with some end splits and plate wear. Well-suited for fence posts and general landscaping projects.

#3 Grade Ties: One to two good sides, may have end splits, and may not be fully straight with more noticeable plate wear.

#4 Grade Ties: One good side, full-length (8’6”–9’) ties, may not be fully straight or square, with plate wear and some rot in the plate area. Split ends or missing corners are common. Best suited for fence posts.

Signature Banding for Safety & Quality

Our signature banding process is designed to make handling and delivery safer and more efficient:

• Ties are secured with high-strength, recyclable poly bands on each end.
• Bands are custom-made for Omaha Track to maximize both safety and effectiveness.
• Wood runners are aligned along the bottom of each bundle for stability and safe offloading.

This attention to detail ensures that every bundle of used ties meets Omaha Track’s standards for safety, durability, and ease of handling.
